How come I always feel like the bad guy when it comes to my 16 year old? It's like I'm always wrong, I ruined her life, my existence bothers her. I try to have conversations with her and she's unresponsive. She either totally ignores me, looks at me like I have two heads, or gives short, curt answers. She does talk me to when she wants something though.
Here's a tip I found that sometimes work when talking to teenagers:
It's easier to talk side by side for instance when driving or doing chores. Maybe have your teen look up a new recipe he or she would like to try. Go shopping for the ingredients together and then make the meal or dessert or whatever together. Work in some conversation during the trip to and/or from the market and while in the kitchen. (a side thought; While in the car ask your teen to put on their radio station of choice, this gives you an opportunity to learn what your child likes and listens to) Don't bombard your teen with a whole bunch of questions on every topic. Stick to one or two topics (or concerns on your part). Be understanding and not judgmental.
I'm still working on finding things that work, I have never had a teenage daughter before!
